Fresh Alaskan Red King Crab
October 15, 2009
The icy cold and treacherous waters of the Bering
Sea are home to one of the marvels of the seafood world - king crab. Of
the three species of king crab caught off the different areas of the Alaskan
coastline and peninsula, it is the red king species that is considered the
premier choice for crab lovers. The Fish Market is proud to exclusively
offer red king crab from Norton Sound and Bristol Bay.
October marks the beginning of the season for Alaskan king crab, and it
usually runs through the end of December. Most of the catch is quickly cooked
and frozen for use by our and other restaurants throughout the year. However,
there is a window of time during the season - generally for about five weeks
between early October and the middle of November - that The Fish Market
is at times able to secure FRESH king crab through our unique relationship
with a company that ships to us directly from Dutch Harbor as the boats
come in. It is, when available, a special treat worth seeking.
Please call The Fish Market restaurant and ask about king crab availability,
especially the possibility of fresh Alaskan red king crab.
